Why choose private counselling?

The NHS is an invaluable resource, providing essential care to millions of people in the UK. Its commitment to public health is something I deeply respect and appreciate. However, through my work in a university and in my counselling practice, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges many people face when trying to access therapeutic support through the NHS.

Choosing private counselling over NHS talking therapy offers several distinct advantages, particularly in addressing the limitations commonly found within NHS services.

One of the biggest advantages of private counselling is the immediate access to support. NHS talking therapies often come with long waiting lists, sometimes lasting several months. In contrast, private counselling allows you to begin therapy quickly, without delays, so you can start addressing your issues sooner.

NHS services often have a one-size-fits-all approach, with a strong focus on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). While CBT can be very effective for some issues, (indeed I use CBT tools and techniques in my practice) it might not be suitable for everyone. NHS therapy sessions also tend to be brief and limited in number, which may not provide enough time to fully address deeper, long-standing issues. In private therapy, you have access to a range of therapeutic approaches tailored to your unique needs. This can include psychodynamic therapy, integrative therapy, person-centred therapy, and others, giving you a more flexible and personalised experience.

NHS practitioners typically undergo training in one specific therapeutic approach, often with less extensive or varied training. This contrasts with private counsellors, who usually have a more in-depth and broad training in multiple modalities. Most private counsellors have undergone at least four years of comprehensive study and practical training, ensuring they are equipped to offer a wider variety of techniques and a deeper understanding of different therapeutic methods.

Private counsellors are bound by the strict ethical guidelines set by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), which ensures that they maintain high professional standards in areas such as confidentiality, respect, and client care. This provides you with confidence that your therapist is adhering to a code of practice that prioritises your well-being.

In the NHS, the thresholds for receiving therapy are often high. You may need to meet specific criteria to be eligible for treatment, which can result in people being turned away or placed on long waiting lists. Private counselling does not have these barriers. Your therapy will be tailored to your individual needs, no matter how complex your issues may be. This ensures you receive the support and care you need without unnecessary obstacles.

Investing in private counselling can feel like a significant expense. We don’t hesitate to spend hundreds—or even thousands—of our hard earned cash on car servicing, MOTs, and repairs because we understand the value of keeping our vehicle running smoothly. Similarly, therapy is an investment in your emotional and mental wellbeing, which are just as essential as ensuring your car functions properly.

If a mechanic charges £60-£100 per hour to work on your car, it highlights the reality that specialist expertise costs money. Therapists, like mechanics, bring years of training and expertise to their work, and they focus on maintaining and improving something even more important than your car—your mental health. Therapy supports you in navigating life’s challenges, building resilience, and creating long-term change, much like how servicing your car prevents costly breakdowns in the future.

While counselling is an investment, the benefits—improved relationships, reduced stress, greater self-awareness, and an overall enhanced quality of life—make it an invaluable choice for those seeking real and lasting transformation.

Choosing private counselling ensures that you receive prompt, personalised, and high-quality care that suits your individual needs and circumstances.
